thanks boof that explains it perfectly. i didnt have the 'popping' problem with the stock manifold until i fitted the edelbrock. im keen to dummy fit it up and slide a feeler guage in the end section to verify just how much clearance there really is Vs the compressed height of the used cork end gask...

cage / boof i noticed last saturday you applying the black permatex to the head for the intake gaskets. im about to redo mine on friday, obviously its applied around the water ports but saw you put some on lower side of exhaust crossover in middle of the head. thought i saw it also on the lower edge...

mert i reckon the reason is because your trim is a custom job and outside of their core business, they would have to shift labor off of their bread and butter work which wouldnt be economical to them (nor to you) as id imagine they are flat out coping with their catalogue demand as it is.
