Flex plate issue, help required
I am looking for some info re what flex plate to use.
I'm changing from manual to auto.
The engine is a 2002 AU 302 with gt40p heads.
The box is from a btr from the same year, but out of a fairlane.
I have rang ford, rocket and anyone else who will listen, and no one can tell me what flex plate to use.
The manual flex plate is 157 tooth, I took off the weight on he flex plate and it weighs 11 ounces. I'm under the impression there is only 2 types, either 28 or 50 ounce counter balance. I'm assuming I need to keep the 157 tooth,
Can anyone please give me the good oil ,

Re: Flex plate issue, help required
You need a 164T 50oz imbalence one otherwise the engine will vibrate badly. Also with a 157T flexplate, the starter won't engage because the teeth will be too far away.

I don't understand how the 157 tooth flex plate will not engage with the auto but will with the manual? Does the auto have a different set up for the starter motor?

Re: Flex plate issue, help required
A 50oz plate doesn't have a 50oz weight it has a weight on one side and cut out / drillings on the other so that side is lighter the total = 50oz. roller cam engines need 50oz. there are 2 size bellhousings the small one needs 157, larger needs 164.
Re: Flex plate issue, help required
Sweet,
So it is has to be 50 oz, I just need to see what size bell housing I've got..problem is I don't know how to find out....there is no markings on the bell housing. It's a btr 97 LE...can't locate any specs on size..

Hold the 157 in it you will see its too small. If the 157 doesn't engage the starter you need a 164 basically.
Re: Flex plate issue, help required
Doh,
When you say it like that it makes perfect sense. It re bolt the old one and see if it engages....
But we are sure it's a 50 oz flex plate.
Thanx nuts and Shaun...

Re: Flex plate issue, help required
The sandwich plate will need to match the bellhousing the starer hole will be further out.
Re: Flex plate issue, help required
Ok I now pronounce NUTS The Lord and master of all things gear boxy.
I lined up the starter motor with he box, low and behold, I'm an idiot....
The starter motor will not engage as it's too far away from the 157 tooth fly wheel.
Therefore I need the 164 as nuts suggested"..
When I looked set he sandwich plate for the manual gearbox it was obvious, the hole for the starter did not match....
My wife said I was so dumb I should buy an E car...."..... Harsh

Damn, I was starting to rub my hands together when I saw you were switching from manual to auto, till I read a bit further. It seems I now have a complete reco'd C4 setup to sell, but you're going late model. Never mind, I'll have to get it listed.noblg wrote:I am looking for some info re what flex plate to use.

Nuts,
I saw that and rang them, they said they did not know if it would fit.
I am getting the impression that there are very few people who ACTUALLY know what they are selling.
It is very frustrating..
Maybe we could get you and Kerry and any other old fart who's lying around and start a speed shop up
