Cobra Jet engine number location?

Post by ponyride »

I'm just trying to help someone out who was told his '69 CJ won't have an engine number. I'm guessing that it's where the number is stamped for a '69 351 engine but not sure if it differed for big blocks.

Can somebody who knows, steer me in the right direction?

It should have an engine number unless its a service replacement block (not uncommon). From memory it is underneath at the rear of the block, I think its the RHS on a flat machined area.
PM Mert, he will know exactly.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing nassi, thanks for that. Barry (Blackthunder) on the other forum will know too but I daren't post the question there, I'll get fifty stabs in the dark.

This bloke was told by two people who reckoned that they knew for sure that "American cars don't have engine numbers" so now he has a Transport number stamped on it to get it licensed but we need to find out of it's the matching numbers engine.

My 69 CJ didn't have one. But it was a service block.

Thanks for all the replies fellas.
Kerry, sounds like same place as small blocks, fun fun fun.
Tim - something weird and unusual to learn every day.
nassi, I read through there before posting, good for casting codes etc but couldn't find anything on stamped engine numbers. It's a great reference site for pretty much everything else though.

Engine Number on my 429CJ is on the block just under the starter motor position.

Casting number, date code, or VIN? Very odd place for a VIN unless a PO stamped it..

Its there mate, even shows a photo and talks about some possibly being on the head itself.

No engine number as such, but a vehical vin number, or part off, that should match the vin of the car. Will be located on the RHS as you stand at the front of the car, on the back of the block just below where it meets the head. There is a pad there for it. But!! Back in the day a lot missed the block and stamped the head, as mine is. It will be in the same place at the back of the head. Unless, the heads have been off, and swapped from left to right in which case it could be on the front of the L/H head. If its a 4 speed the vin or part of will be stamped on the top ear of the gearbox as well. Got all that and it matches the car dash vin. You have a numbers matching car!!

Automatics also got the stamp on a pad on the top of the main case just in front of the tailhousing.
