So I got the Friday afternoon Dart short block.

It looks like it will stay a 347 as it will just need a hone to clean up the bores. This means I'll be keeping the current rotating assembly..

The final wash up was the crank turned out to be a little tight. So a new set of bearings throughout and a hone is all that is required. Also they suspect the bores weren't cleaned up properly after it's initial machining and it wasn't plate honed.

The machinist said this is all pretty unusual for a dart short block.

The bore looks deeply scratched to me but it is good news it was not so serious that a basic (heavy) hone is all that is needed. Good news.

Are you changing the cam?
I will someday think of something clever to say.

No sticking with the current cam for now. When I took it out there wasn't a mark on it. If I go for a bigger cam with those heads and induction I could see a new drive train in the near future!! This cam will limit the motor to 420HP @ 6200.

This time I will run the motor in with HDD magnets on the sump bolt and oil filter!!

LOL - fair enough. In any case, 420 HP will keep most happy for sure.

Hey Luke,
Where do you get the magnets from?, and how do you utilise them.

Most computer HDDs have really strong magnets in them. I plan to put one on the sump bolt (outside the sump) and on the oil filter to pick up any bits of metal that may be in the oil.

I think you can buy magnetic sump bolts. Probably not as strong a magnet as the HDD but still a good option.
