Camless technology is getting closer

The next big step will be camless engine technology. Here is information on excellent progress of one system.

Shouldn't be too difficult to retrofit either really.

why do they still use a tapered disc on a stick as a valve? Why not use the same principles (as a solenoid effectively) to control a rotating slot across the inlet/exhaust port? The amount of rotation could essentially open the port up more like a swivel ball does in a water valve.

Similar to proportional solenoids in process control.
Speed of actuation is probably the answer though.
