rear bumper gap

Post by 66STNG »

H gents,
I installed my rear bumper bar, it looks as though you could drive a truck in the gap at the side. The bumper, brackets and rear valance is repo. the gaps are even on either side but big.
A- how large should the gap be, and
B- do I have to cut down the bumper brackets to make it fit????

They are not superb from factory, but yes some people cut the brackets down to get them in closer.
Got a pic?

You have to bend the bars to make them fit, Ive had them on and on 6 times to get them right.

Here's a pic, its more the gap is large, then not being square

.
It just appears to be sticking out too much, ie you can put your thumb in the gap

That gap looks fairly standard to me. As Shaun said, try the end cap on first (supposed to be bolted on first anyway)

Repo bumper, repo quarter panel. That is a decent fit for them.

+1 on putting the quarter panel end caps on first before you start cutting.

Listen to Oz and ShaunP!

They did have large gaps, it's not like todays cars with 1/8 inch (5 mm for you guys) gaps.

Ok, put on the extensions, and as you can see the bumper needs to come out to line up with extension which will make the gap larger..
