why the different sized pistons in the same caliper?

from what I found out, as the rotor enters past the smaller piston first the clamping force increases slightly as the rotor passes through the caliper past the larger piston, and apparently more even pad wear compared to full pressure on entry and possibly tapering the pad wear. I'm sure Charbel can correct me, or add another explanation. as yet I've only bench tested mine..so yet to find the real truth...lol
