Top loader whine / noisy ‘69 GT

Post by FrankN »

I’ve recently had my top loader 4 speed in my ‘69 GT Mustang reconditioned, it was noisy in 2nd and 3rd, would sometimes grind going into 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and occasionally drop out of 3rd and 4th.

It was removed and sent off to a transmission speacialist.

When reinsatalled, a new complete clutch assembly was also installed. And some work was done on the Hurst Shifter.

All good so far. Except it still has a whine in 2nd and 3rd. Not too loud but still there.

I spent $2.5k on the gearbox alone plus labour to remove and install plus’s all periferals.

Does this sound right to you guys, the transmission guy says all top loaders whine - I don’t remember the top loader in my XW GT Falcon whining in any gear.

Any ideas? Am I being too fussy?

They are happy to remove it and look at it again, but assure me the whine I’m hearing is normal. In fact they said by removing it and changing more parts could in fact make it worse.

What’s your opinion????

Jumping out of gear is generally worn syncro dog teeth on the gears, typically these gears will have been replaced with new aftermarket gears, if so you will likely hear them, they will lap/wear to the lay gear cluster in time and may get quieter, but the cluster will also be worn to the old gears. You wont hear 4th as its direct drive. Without hearing it I suspect this is the issue. TL are not silent in any case.

Hi Shaunp - yes the transmission builder did say that it may be quieter as time goes on, thanks for your input.
