Drag Link touching sump

Post by Keegan »

Hi all.

First question to this wonderful forum for me so please tell me if I have explained myself fully. I have a 68 Fastback GT with an original S code engine and C6 transmission. The engine was fitted with a Canton sump which I have now swapped with an original one. The drag link is now touching the sides of the sump on full steering lock both ways. Does this mean I have to raise the engine slightly? Is this done with packers/ shims?
Regards, Jim.

Mounts are only 6 months old. The drag link is the correct one for a power steering setup. I have also changed upper and lower control arms, pitman arm and idler arm, and fully overhauled the power steering prior to changing the sump.

Not sure why it would touch then Unless it does it on full lock due to having different stub axles/caster bars

That would be my call as the stock setup goes no where near the sump

Is it possible that the sump is too deep at the rear? It was off an F100.

I think you may have answered your own question. Can you measure the difference in depth from the Canton sump to what you have installed?

Your right. I just hopped under and checked. The Canton is 35mm deep with splayed edges and the one on the car is 50mm to where the touch mark are. You wouldn't believe where I got the sump from - Sean.

Thanks Kerry, you just saved me alot of time. Sean gave me the one off the engine from his F100 thinking they were the same. I just had a quick look on the net and I can see that the proper one is different to what I have. They have splayed edges also like the Canton ones do.
