Will this damn torque converter come off???

What a night, I finally got the engine out of my 66 mustang. That being the 289 engine, and was just about to put the thing on my engine stand when I realised that the damn torque converter is still on. How do I remove it?

3-4 bolts/nuts (model dependant) on the front side of the flex plate. Hold it in place by hand when removing the last one lest it falls off.

If you have got that bit done and its still stuck..............
Lower the engine onto the floor, make like a woman.....put the donk between your legs.... put your feet against the engine mounts as a brace, grab the torque converter and wiggle wiggle. Move your hand positions around and keep wiggling. The more you wiggle, the sooner it will come.

thanks mate, the only issue i have is, the torque converter wont turn, i can see one bolt, but the bolt is rounded. the other 3 bolts look the same, but i cant even get to them because of it not spinning

pull all the spark plugs out to start with. The compression of the engine is probably holding it from turning freely

If your harmonic balancer is still on, use a socket on the bolt to turn the engine into place where you can undo the bolts.

If your getting a new converter, cut the nuts off. If your keeping it and the nuts are rounded, use a socket thats old thats the next size down. Hit it hard over the rounded nut so it cuts into the rounded nut edges.

You may only get one off before the socket gives out but may get all 3/4

You could also heat them up with an oxy prior using the socket

A good set of multi grips may work also but those things never do what you want them to do

Makes ya wonder who the hell tightened them up so tight that all of em are rounded

On a serious note,
if the nuts are rounded off, roll it round until you can poke a die grinder in the starter hole to grind 2 flats into the nut, that will give the vice grips a little more hope.
