Warping a mustang
So my 66 mustang coupe needs new floor pans. I managed to cut out the full right side but I'm finding it hard to get my hands on a borrowed mig welder. Last week I bought the left side floor and was wondering, if I cut out the left side to fit the pan will I risk warping the car since I don't have a mig to weld them in place???
Thanks in advance

Hey Tristan .
I have a MIG welder you can borrow if you get totally stuck.
Would be good if I actually knew how to use it ...
Cheers,
Frank.

Re: Warping a mustang
The car should remain OK as long as you have it supported correctly. Are the mechanicals out (engine, gearbox, front & rear suspension) ?tceddia wrote:So my 66 mustang coupe needs new floor pans. Reason I ask this as it tells me how to suggest you support the body shell. Ideally it should be on a jig, but as the car would be in your garage, I doubt you would have access to one.
If the drive train is still in, then......
To support the shell you really need 8 jack stands (perfect world). 4 would be the standard ratchet type & 4 would be screw adjustable.
Floor level.....
4 ratchet type stands, 1 at each end of the rocker (sill) panels. The screw type, 2 under the front rails where the bumper brackets bolt on & the other 2 at the rear rails behind the rear spring hangers. Adjust them until the door gaps look good & doors close well.
Car is ready for floor surgery.
You can always use the 4 ratchet type jack stands under the rockers & wood chocking for the front & rear with wedges hammered in to get the desired gaps.
If you leave the front & rear of car unsupported it can change your gaps.

Re: Warping a mustang
the engine is out but the car is still on its wheels. ive only cut out the right side so far so i might have to do what you say ozbilt on another note, the right side floor pans i have, have not been coated in anything but oil it seems, the left side however have been coated with a black etch primer. do i need to etch prime the right side floor pans before i weld them??
oh and what are the pans made of? just for curiosity.
thanks everyone

Re: Warping a mustang
You have 2 different brands of floors. The bare one is probably Canadian made while the black one is more than likely Taiwanese.
Clean off the oil & paint with weld through primer where the joins are & where you will not be able to paint later.

Re: Warping a mustang
Thanks ozbilt. Looks like I'll be on my way to buy some weld through etch primer hahaha. I might as well do the whole pan while it's easy to do.

Re: Warping a mustang
Tc,
be careful which weld through primer you buy. Ignore any with GAL in them....esp with a mig.
My preffered one is a copper based item, but I am not sure where to get it outside of wurth. I'll do a lookup
