driveshaft

Post by shane427 »

Just got a quote for brand new drive shaft, new unis, yokes and painted - $550.

Does this sound reasonable?

What are my option by way of picking one up from the wreckers/second hand.

Its for a 65' fastback with 4spd toploader and 9inch. Bit of a non standard combo so assume would need to either:
1) Find one the right length then get a new pinion yoke to suit the 9inch?
2) Find one with a slip and pinion yoke to suit the toploader and 9inch then get modified in length to suit.
3) Find one the right length 67? falcon? with the right yokes :dance2:

Should I be getting new unis regardless, or only if f^@ked?

Or should I stop being a tightarse and just get a new one? :argh:

My 2C...
Your going to be hard pressed to get one locally with the right length / uni combination.. so you'll be modifying anyways..

Whats difference (including the additional cost to modify) between one of 'unknown' quality/history vs getting correct combo new (with known quality / history and piece of mind.

BTW, Did you speak to Phil at Final Drive..? only place to go locally for driveshafts/diffs (IMO)

A new one is the go, $550 sounds reasonable, I just got a new one made up but I supplied the slip yoke and rear flange, it was $400.

Including new yoke seems about right.
Get it in a 3" heavy duty tube, with at least 1310 uni's. What size yoke is the 9"?

What is the difference between say 8 3/4" and 9 yokes....C4 and toaploader yokes etc. Is it the diameter, number of splines?

Or is it just the difference in shaft lengths due to gearbox and diff size?

Scott66stang might have something in the graveyard

There are many differences in the pinion yoke, short, long, different uni sizes, and different spline counts for different diffs. Unsure if 8" & std 9" are the same spline.

Slip yokes are similar deal, different lengths, spline count etc etc.

I run a Strange (brand name) forged steel Pinion yoke, and Slip Yoke, with 1350 size unis (same as F350). My shaft and unis was $400, the yokes were about $200 each. The setup is good for about 1200hp in a car my weight.

Definately new Uni's dont stuff around there , i think they are only around $35 - $40 each .
Ok Shane when i got home i tried the C4 auto yoke in a T5 and it fits that aswell as my NC fairlane auto , i dont have any toploaders. So question to people in forum land .
1: is a T5 spline the same as the toploader?
2: is the unijoint size/mounting the same 8"to 9" , it looks the same on my XY falcon 9"
3: Do i have a shaft that will fit or can be modded, and will i part with it for a carton of Bundy?
Oops! that last one is a question for me :argh:

Shane you can take one of my tailshafts and try it and get your car on the road , i wont need it for a while yet and havent decided what im using yet , may use the NC Fairlane diff and shaft yet, i have 2 because the 67vert shaft is the same as the 66FB i have. Also one of my Falcon ones may be right for it too.

The quoted price seems about right.
I just had my shaft shortened and new uni's fitted etc.
The shortening was $160 new uni's where $60 each from memory.
Just over $300 all up.

Cheers
