Kas' 66 coupe

Post by Kas »

Hello everyone, I’ve been reading for a while and thought it was time to start a thread. I’ve had this for around a year now and not much has been done but with some advice from you guys, hopefully that can change.

Here’s a pic from the add

The day I got it home

The car has quite a few issues and I’m unsure of what is required having never done this before. I stripped back the roof and found some rust pitting, worse in some areas ok in others. I took some photos before I hit it with a spray-pack.

Some of the worse pitting

Sign of previous repair?

I also just want to say that I really appreciate the time that those who have “been there done that” take to read and advise people like me. I asked about some hand tools before and got really good responses so thank you guys.

Good to hear from you again Kas
Thats a shame about the roof , looks like its toast and proberably even warped and buckled due to trying to remove the rust, not to mention that previous repair.
I think maybe you should throw up some more pics of the rest of the body issues if any to look at the overall picture.
Good news is the talented ones in Steve and Kerry are over your way in the East aswell as on the forum for great advise and repair work if needed. I assume you can buy a new roof for a Coupe? i know you can for a fastback at not a huge price.
Your not alone , a lot of us are or have been in the same position.
Enjoy the ride

Only make new fastback roof skins. So a good used roof is in order. That car obviously was a vinyl roof car.

Hmmm... that's odd isn't it. Probably the same reason they don't make the replacement gutters for the convertibles.

I knew that ! :-D

Welcome aboard Kas and I feel for you. I really do.
But its not the end of the world.
I was in the same boat.
Im a noob who has never restored a car before (or done much else with cars).
Bought a 68 coupe with a vinyl top and rust in the roof much worse than urs.
Nearly gave up the day I pulled the vinyl off.

Was convinced the dealer had spotted a noob and sold him a dud.
The guys on this forum (and the other one) have given me inspiration and good advice.
Lot of very clever guys on here.
One shady character even sold me a new roof :poke:

To read about my roof issues, take a look here

Sent her off for paint a couple of weeks back.

We love project threads with lots of pics :-D

Contact Barry at Early Pony Parts in Bendigo (03) 5439 7449. Barry wrecks early mustangs and may have a sound roof or may be able to source one for you.
