Hey everyone, just getting some info together for when I will bring a car over from the states, with GST is that 10% on the cost of the car and all transport? So transport across the US, shipping to Aust? and the Luxury
car tax is that inclusive of the total cost of the car and transport together?
This is a little confusing!

Re: GST and LCT costs?
Should not include the shipping across the US.
You need to split up your invoices though, otherwise they will probably just lump it together.
LCT I didnt think applies either, though this site says it does for a car of value AUD$42999+ :

I would check with the Govt site.
Cheers,
Frank.

Re: GST and LCT costs?
GST on inter-US transport is debatable but technically should be included as part of your import cost. Can probably not include it but no point farking around the gov. for $50 GST saving.
GST is payable on shipping, car cost is AU$, unloading, customs, AQIS etc etc. So you don't underestimate I would just add a flat 10% on to all of your costs. Everyone always underestimates the cost as its all the little things that add up...I know I did
Its all worth while and its favourable AU$ at the moment. Good luck.
If you want PM me, i kept a spreadsheet of all my costs.

Re: GST and LCT costs?
yep - I paid 10% on purchase price of the car + all transport & shipping
Plus declared the parts I also purchased and paid the GST on them as well - it's just not worth the arguement with them .....coz you'll loose everytime!!
pay em and piss em off out of ya hair - thats the best motto!!

Re: GST and LCT costs?
US transport IS included in GST calculations.. (read 'should' - since it seems to depend on who is interpreting the ruling)
Just another point to note...
GST is calculated when the car LEAVES the states.. NOT when you BUY it...
ie Buy today @94c.. leave it in limbo for six months.. Ship when the $ is at 80c.. and you pay GST based on 80c
When the car 'leaves' is also upto interpretation.. some customs agents will base it on the day the ship leaves... others on the day the container is loaded...

Re: GST and LCT costs?
Hmmm... I wouldn't have thought shipping in the US was included.
But I dont know first hand. If you separate your invoices , then how would they know ? You could have driven it across (if its a driver). Then again as Happy says, just pay them and piss 'em off !
Cheers,
Frank.
