9" bearing and seal replacment

Post by 69candy »

Anybody tell the best place to source a set of axle bearings and seals for a 31 spline 9"?? Somewhere along the line one of the, seal sleevs on the axle has been removed and a 28 spline seal fitted. Any drama's with this?? as I recon finding one of those might be tricky!!
Also, whats the best way to remove the bearings and fit the new ones. First timer at this!!!

You'll need a press to do them properly.
Can't help you on the seal advise though, sorry.

I just got detroit locker trutrac centre , axle bearings & seals from Aussie Diffs in Curumbin QLD last week(mine is a 28 spline so I won't pass on details as they are probably incorrect). I had to measure the ID, OD of both bearings & seals (well, ID of seal is a little bit less than the OD of axle shaft where seal rides). They had them all on the shelf once I supplied them with measurements & couriered them to me overnight.
The axle bearings were a little tricky to remove. 1st , you have to hammer the bearing retaining rings, side on with a cold chisel. About 6-8 bashes (needed 2 people - 1 to support axle while 2nd person whallops bearing retainer) and then retainer becomes loose. Then you need to press the bearing off in a proper press. New bearings come with new retaining rings. Press new bearings on & then press retainers on afterwards.
Any diff. specialist nearby should be able to help you out with the parts.

Hell yeah , mainly in circles! :fap:
It's great , behaves like a 1 legger until you stamp on it. No noises. Can't even tell I've changed it until ya wanna put on a show & then "hello , donut city"!

Great stuff.. I've been trying to decide what to do with my open centre.
I dont like full lockers because you can feel the car wanting to twist itself around corners.
Don't like the old detroits because of the noises, and again they want to twist the car around corners.

So this thing is nice and smooth?

Sorry about the hijack 69candy!

Yes , very very smooth! $880 well spent. Can't tell it's a LSD until you want it. Had a mechanic mate help with the carrier bearing preload/gear backlash. No noises or whines.
I initially found the ebay shop & were advertised for $940 I think. Ended up ringing Aussie Diffs directly & without even pushing him ,he dropped price to $880 . Extra for the seals & bearings - around$170 for the 4 bearings & 2 seals.
Cheapest way I could find to convert to LSD without going 2nd hand.
They had detroit locker Positrac centres about $300 cheaper but I didn't like the idea of a clutch pack - I'll be abusing mine a little :headbang: :dance2:
Figured the clutch pack needs maintaining over the years & the TruTrac is all gear driven.
