Timing cover and flex plate

Post by xpconnor »

Woody has asked me to send the sump, timing cover and flex plate to him for my engine build but not sure if they are reusable or not so thought I would post some pics and get your opinions.

There is a pit right where a gasket will sit on both sides of this water gallery.

And the flex plate has a bit of scoring on it, a few hot spots and some of the holes gut a bit bent as I had to stick a bar through them to stop it spinning when I was trying to undo the bolts. I have tapped them flat with a hammer but not sure if that is enough.

Sorry about the quality of some of the photos but hopefully you guys can get an idea of whether or not it is worth me posting these to Queensland or not.

Thanks

For what you are spending on the engine, just get all new stuff for it as there is no benefit in using old parts.

I agree - your engine cost is in the upper areas so a few hundred dollars makes little sense. He will have to balance the flex plate with the crank and it need to be the correct balance weight any way and since he is organising the crank he would know what it is balanced at, e.g., neutral, 28ox or 50 oz. The cover can be reused - once cleaned up - but it a low cost item and any way not sure what gear your using (V belt or not) so the cover changes based on some of those choices. Get him to get new gear.

I agree and disagree with boof.

Disagree point....... don't go and get him a new flexplate.
Agree point......you're spending mega rubles..........let the builder source and supply a new flexplate. they are less than $200...at least you know he will order the correct part first time.

As for the timing cover...I'm not sure you can buy a new one, and as boof says it may not be suitable to your application. If it s suitable and you don't have the gear to clean it up properly, then mail it to me and i'll do it for you gratis.

cheers

3rd item i missed....

sump....

you ar not going concourse...do yourself a favour and raid a wreckers for a 5 litre. they have a stiffener on each side of the sump. Steal those and the bolts(they are longer) and give em to your builder.

They provide a stiffer joint and are less prone to leaking...even when the gasket is installed dry.

I did say get the engine builder to get all of the parts required.

There are four main timing covers - for example with or without mech fuel pump support etc

Looking on summit they are available.

The same applies to the sump - I would use a deep pan any way. Your model mustang requires the pan to be the front style. See Cages build thread - everything was new including pan, front cover and the flex plate....

He is providing the warranty on the engine hence use all new parts that he has selected.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

I think I will probably just get Woody to put new parts on then. I looked on the Aus post site and it estimates it to be $80 to post the sump to Queensland due to the size of the box it would need to go in. Looked up the price of a new sump and it is not much different.

With the flex plate Woody was going to order the crank to be the correct weight for the plate I had. But again I will just tell him to use a new one.

The timing cover I don't know much about, but I want the engine to look semi sleeper so wouldn't be running fancy belts or mech fuel pump. The one I have came off a standard 302.

I think in regards to the cover I will get a price from woody for a new one and then make a decision about sending it to Jas to see about getting it cleaned up unless Jas you think now knowing I can get a new one to not even bother.

The timing case is corroded, junk it.

If you have a choice go with a 28oz crank. It is far better than a 50oz. I would not expect him to choose anything other than 28oz unless it is a big effort engine then I would go internally balanced.

If he insists he wants a standard sump I have one around here from a recent engine build of my mustang (in which I have used a deeper pan).

Thanks guys. I will scrap the timing cover and Boof I might take you up on that offer of the sump, I will just see what Woody says. I don't think he will insist on a standard one but if he believes it will seal fine with no leaks then I am happy with one. I am trying not to skimp on the small things but it is the cost of all the small things that ads up so just wanted to see if any of this stuff was useable.
Thanks again
