Your plan sounds good. Get the block done - minimum decking as possible. Mock it up. Get piston tops machined then balance the lot. Minor changes for the heads water passages your ready to screw it together. Shorties are likely to be fine though from experience you just never know until you try so expect to have (small) fitment issues.
I will someday think of something clever to say.

Found these pistons on ebay

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/140909902273 ... 1438.l2649

Flat tops with 1.635 comp height. Getting pretty close to the height needed.
Looks like I'll have to get my arse into gear, get some cash together and start gathering parts.

Inexpensive.
Note: They are a cast piston in any case time to shake the money tree.

Here is my AU XR8 series III 302 Windsor for sale, brand new never fired complete assembly if interested. I see these good little motors mentioned a few times in this thread. Not some crappy Chinese crate motor, assembled here by Tickford.

Have some other bits listed too including the brand new Gearbox

Pinto Pete- I've already got a set of heads. 302 2V closed chamber with 2V inlet and 4V exhaust valves, hardened seats and bronze guides. they are on a 351C I built about 10 years ago thats sitting in the shed.

Dollars area bit short at the moment due to the Mrs being 7 months along with our 2nd bub. At the moment the engine is all at the planning stage- work out what I need, get together a shopping list then buy parts as the cash comes available. I've got a pile of XA-XC Falcon coupe bits I need to start selling off to get some cash together.

D0ZX, You're right about the little Tickford motors. I had a S3 AU ute

Haha they're already gone. 15x9 and 15x10 v5's. I did trial fit them but the 10s were the wrong offset and they might last a week without buckling on the shitty roads.

Matt at E-autolite spares at the coast often has good 351 roller cam short motors from F trucks for about $650, They make a good base to start from, they have little to no crank or bore wear, factory roller cam, etc they are F4TE blocks, no corrosion etc etc

Shaunp- thanks for the lead on a 351 block. My thought is if I go 351 cubes I will use the 351C I've already got. I'm actually thinking the clevo might be the way to go. The only real issue with it is I built it for straight LPG. The static compression ratio is 11.3:1 which might be a little high for pump fuel. The other changes would be minor, recurve the dizzy to suit petrol and replace the single plane manifold with a dual plane. It pushed an XD Falcon to high 13's - low 14's over the quarter and was my daily drive for 6 years. Never gave me any trouble just turn the key and go. I know a clevo isn't quite "kosher" on a 69 Mustang. BUT, it's there just gathering dust where it been since the XD did what XD's do (rust away).
