ok, well after doing the household chores I got the Mustang up in the air and had a visit from Moe.
Diff still had heaps of oil, very black and rather runny however oil in it.
The burning smell would have been diff oil flicking on the exhaust I would say.
So after MOE left I took a few shots

after reading link provided by MOE earlier in the week

http://www.mustangmonthly.com/howto/mum ... index.html

it would seem that maybe the axle seal is stuffed too.

One thought was maybe the oil was thinner so it was able to seep through the seals, should I change oil first and see if it stops as a short term fix?

yeah I know I looked at a few different ones but I like the look of the original one Nassi. Call me silly I like how original the car is and want to keep it as close as I can. And its not that much more $ to have it done.

If the diff is noisy, get it rebuilt now. while you're at it change the axle bearings and seals. The rear brake shoes will need to be replaced as they are contaminated with oil. Have you replaced the wheel brake cylinders since you've owned the car? If not, replace them as well.

My sentiments as well. Get it all done at once. Peace of mind for years to come (unless the diff guys get it wrong & you have to take it back 3 times - seems to be one of the most popular come backs of car repairs for some reason!!)

The wheel cylinders were new when i bought the car, do i still get some whith parts i start to source.

How long will they have my diff do u think?
do i just take whole diff in or just the centre?
do i restore the housing before so i can paint the different colours and not need to pull it apart again?
can i source the correct colours here in Australia?

So many questions, really just thinking out loud. But help would be appriciated.

Yeap they are sitting waiting. Was always the plan to replace complete rear, springs included.
The old SD issue slowed it all down.

The wheel cylinders were new Have you bled them since owning the car? Reason is brake fluid is hydoscopic, meaning it absorbs water. Thats why they rust up.

How long will they have my diff do u think?are you sure its diff noise you're experiencing? Probably take a week to rebuild.

do i just take whole diff in or just the centre? Centre only.

do i restore the housing before so i can paint the different colours and not need to pull it apart again? I would thoroughly clean and paint the housing then install new axle seals. Just paint the housing satin black and the centre red oxide if you want to go anal on me. otherwise just all black.

can i source the correct colours here in Australia? Colours should be available and I think they were the subject of an earlier thread. Moe will find it. :poke:

Hey Justin,
When I did my rear end I just did the lot so there was no repeats of dismantiling:
Shoes,
drums,
wheel cylinders,
springs & cables,
bearings,
seals,
oil & brake fluids,
wheels,
tyres:
So far
cheers,

You have find some on who can lap the gears, even then you may not get rid of a period noise, ie a slight whine a certain speed. Diff lapping in Brisbane can do them. Just setting them up with new bearings won't fix a whine, a bearing grumble yes.

There is alittle free play (if thats what it is called) in the diff.
Spin the wheel and then change direction there is a lag in the other wheel.
Plan shaun is to have it done correctly. Diff shop should be able to tell that, if I go to a good one? yeah
