You could try Southern Differentials at Woden, they do all of my fleet vehicles and I would recomend them.

Justin,
don't be scared of diff lag. in one sense it can be a good thing, as it isn't loading the axles.

If i was you, i'd do 3 things.

1. Replace the Diff oil.....it ain't supposed to be thin!!!
2. Replace the RH axle seal and bearing (do em both for peace of mind)
3. Replace the uni joint.

Whilst its hard to tell from the pics, a couple of things stand out for me.

When i looked at the 'grunge' on the tunnel, i went pinion seal!.
When i looked at the area around the pinion splash plate, i noted it was remarkably dry for the amount of grunge on the tuinnel.
I then looked at the oil spotting on the front of the diff. To get there, it cannot come from the pinion seal, except in sudden and catastrophic failure. Another thing i noticed was how dry the face of the pumpkin is. There is no wash back from the pinion seal, and splash plate.
If you had a pinion seal failure, the oil spotting will be rearwards of the seal, not outwards.

Now take a look at the pic you posted showing the Pinion yoke and end of the tail shaft....2nd pic in your set.
Note how the face of the yoke is also covered in grunge. Looking at your 3rd pic showing spotting on the face of the diff housing, there are only 2 ways to get oil there....rotationally from the uni (my patrol suffers this in 6 positions after a grease up) or from something failed further forward.

In your case i beleive its uni. Either you over greased it, and what you see is the uni getting rid of the excess, or the uni seals have failed and it needs replacement.

As for rebuilding the diff.....this ones your driver yer? Is it making noise? is it doing shit it shouldn't? If the answer is no to both, then leave the thing alone. A lot of money for no gain.

don't be scared of diff lag - ok fair enough

may be a few things all at once and could some of the spotting you refer to be coming from leaks in engine and gearbox? just to through more into the mix.

Either you over greased it - no haven't over greased it, haven't greased it full stop.
so would say you could be correct and I was going to ask about doing the drive shaft also

this ones your driver yer- no not a driver anymore, may become driver again depending how things play out. Have too many cars now, need to thin the heard.

thanks for your advice, have taken on board, may clean it all up this week and see what happens with a cruize. I will be sure to check the rear brakes first but.

Np.

I might be wrong, i might be right, but at least from my bits you have some solid things to go inspecting for.

That yoke's grunge is still telling me the rear uni has failed.

You have a few good points there Jas. However i think the Yokes grunge is leaking past the joke spline and out from around the yoke washer and nut. This was happening on mine and although i have not run my car yet to see if it has now stopped, i have replaced the pinion seal and tightened the nut back up with a little sealant behind the washer.
Perhaps you could remove the shaft and see if the nut can be tightened a little just to stop the leak, not forgetting it has a collapeable spacer which if tightened too much will alter the diff pinion setting.
I would also suggest replacing both axle seals because if one has gone the other wont be far off leaking aswell, and then change the oil before going too much further.

ok, cool thanks scott. May have someone who knows a little more come over for a coke and have a look.......
as I have said I was always going to restore the rear end. may be the best option. I have a few projects to do at the moment so was just trying to buy some time.

So I finally got out to the cave (well the old man's cave) long story in itself.
Got the wheels off, drums off and you guessed it the axle seal was leaking.
So off with the brakes and out with the axle. easier then I thought.
Then the old man doesn't seize to amaze me with what he has hidden in the cave.
Out with a slide hammer and a couple of pulling options a couple of taps and it was out.

now a question,
1/ is it a mustang specific seal or same as any Aussie fords?
May be able to get one tomorrow if same as Aussie ford

got under car and had a good look at front of diff. Seemed really dry and not leaking around the pinion seal.
so maybe the uni, there was very little movement in uni so maybe was over filled with grease as was suggested earlier.

so thinking I will do the axle seal, change the oil and clean up uni and surrounding area and watch it and see what happens

Take the bearing & seal off & then go to Repco or a bearing place. They will identify by the numbers

Replace the bearing anyway & do both axles. They are cheap compared to sitting on the side of the road needing a tow truck.

I have been instructed to ask the canberra guys if anyone has a c4 yoke to stick in the end of the gearbox?

Yes as luck would have it the gearbox has to be removed again.
