The containers have some pretty nasty stuff in them I read, so the environmental impact will get a whole lot worse.

if so - someone might be trying to send the Kiwi's a bigger message !!
This whole thing raises a lot of questions like:
1. just how many containers can you stack on top before it becomes unsafe and is begging for this to happen.
2. The penalties world wide for running a ship aground need to raised 1000 fold.
3. The shipping company owners need to be more liable themselves to the world for this kind of enviromental fu*k up
4. The skippers need to be flogged with razor blades - for just being FU*KIN stupid.
+ many more reasons one could go on about.
