What would you need the bigger one for? Thought the smaller one seemed more suitable for diffs and steering boxes hence my choice.
Thanks for the tips mate so the caps can "walk" a bit with big torque applications? Although I think my T5 box will be the weak link in my drivetrain package before the diff goes.

Re: Diff Rebuild Question
Yeah caps can move a bit, they do this on the Group N and some of the Tran-am cars that run 8". With the torque wrench I just figured that 1"pound was fine enough adjustment, and never know if I may need the extra range down the track, I do have a couple of other "pound ones but just brake type, guess I should have checked what they went to. Steering boxes I do by feel. The other advantage to getting rid of the crush pinion spacer is that you can always remove the yoke without fear of changing the preload down the track. Though Timken taper bearings last longer tight then loose, they need preload to live.
Re: Diff Rebuild Question
Diff is all done.
Pinion preload being set with the new flash in-lb torque wrench.
Didn't get a photo of case spread setup or backlash measuring. Had to fabricate a little jig to get the dial guage across the carrier bearing caps for case spread measuring. Took 3 iterations of backlash and pinion depth to get an acceptable pattern as below.
Pattern drive
Pattern coast
Lick of gloss black ready for the big swap over.
Will reserve my final comments till I get the new diff in the car and give it a test drive but it was all pretty straight forward and nothing complex about it apart from the equipment needed.

Re: Diff Rebuild Question
If anyone in Perth wants to do a diff and needs a dial gauge torque wrench et me know. Probably not keen to lend out but it only takes 10 mins to setup the pinion bearings up so could just do them at mine.

Re: Diff Rebuild Question
Good work Trav. Your right not hard to do just need specialist equipment. Glad it went well, the pattern look spot on.
I will someday think of something clever to say.
