If it was just the thick cable from the battery to the starter, you have to do a lot to ruin those cables. If you didn't see smoke coming from somewhere, then I wouldn't be too concerned, especially if all you did was touch it to the terminal and made it spark. Actually, you might want to check the earth cable from the chassis to your engine. If your main earth goes to the chassis, then you need a nice thick cable from the chassis to the engine to make sure the starter has enough power. If your main earth goes to your engine (the way I prefer it to be) then you can get away with a smaller earth (say around 6mm) to the chassis from the engine. Even if you have these cables in place, check that they have nice clean connections to the chassis.
