We did it on Sunday. Thanks to gbx, my old man and my mate (who is also the lucky owner of a sweet shed and hoist) for the help.
Gearbox and new converter went in pretty smoothly.
Beforehand I checked that we had previously done the constant pressure mods properly and we had. So swapped my VB into the new box as well as my short tail housing.
Couldn't fit one of my pressure sensors in, so left that out and have ordered some fittings that will hopefully allow me to fit it. That's the sensor that is going to measure my direct clutch pack pressure in case 3rd gear still slips.
We finished somewhere around 6pm I would say. I was pretty cocky about it working without issues. Took it out for it's first drive and the bastard thing would not change out of first gear. Thinking the worst and feeling not so cocky now, drove it back into the shed. George had to go at this point as he was already late for another gig.
Apon checking the TV cable, we found it was pulling the lever forward around an inch... wtf.
Still don't really know why this happened when it was fine on my box, but anyway we made a new mounting method for the Lokar cable bracket and it was much better.
Went back out and it changed gear now, but it still wasn't perfect.
When manually shifting down to 1st, taking off, then shifting to 2nd, it did not shift. Shifting into 3rd would then seem to go straight from 2nd to 3rd. It was enough to get it home though, so I just drove home and put it in the garage. I was pretty sure this was a shifter cable adjustment issue, because shifting from D to N would take a few seconds for it to register. Bare in mind that this VB was working fine in my old gearbox earlier that day.
On the plus side, overdrive was shifting in at 80kph instead of 95, so that was a plus - and I believe that was because the TV cable always had a bit too much tension on it.
Last night George came back over for a visit and we adjusted the TV cable to take the slack out of it, and also re-adjusted the B&M shifter cable following a video guide they put on youtube. Bingo - it's working pretty well.
One minor issue left - most of the time when I come to a stop it doesn't shift all the way down to 1st. It takes off in 2nd. If I put my foot down a bit, it kicks down into 1st. Also if I shift it to N while I'm stopped, then back into D it starts in 1st. So I think there's a sticky valve in the VB.
I will drive it for a few weeks and if it doesn't clear up, I will pull the VB and clean it out. Next will be to get it back on the dyno to see if it can hold 3rd gear now.
The wide radio gearset from the 4R70W has made 1st gear a fair bit lower and it is now way too easy to lose traction.
