You've set the float heights using the windows or ports on the holley?

The only reason I would think it's spark is if something is moving when you hit the brakes or turn, but it seems unlikely.
Backfiring when you release the throttle sounds like lean popping (possibly low float height).
Hard to start can also point to low float height.
Cutting out around corners... again, float height.

Are you sure it's right?
Haven't checked the floats yet - was going to use the ports method.

Was going to do that first but the mechanic got me thinking...

So your holley still has the big screws in the bowls for checking float height?
Too easy - the height is right when fuel is JUST dribbling out of the holes with the engine running.

It ended up being a vacuum issue - all sorted now, running sweet :burnout:

Update on effie - duraspark system replaced by an MSD billet dizzy and coil, ARP oil pump drive, full kit through Holley carb, leads and lead holders, rocker covers, cooling system overhaul starting with radiator (80mm bigger in both width and height) shroud, fan.
Whilst the pulley is off to fit new fan will remove the ac compressor mount so the coil can be mounted on inner guard.
Comp test was 130 stable across 7 cylinders with the 8th on 125, no oil use or smoke so I’ll keep trucking on.
Cheers
