Re: Glenn's '67 Project (without a clever name)
Well... looks like it might be a productive weekend, I managed to wrangle and wrestle the engine hoist and engine stand to the front of the garage and in the process managed to get the replacement trunk lid out of the back of the garage and ready for changing over...
...and for those out there who are like me and prefer looking at pictures as opposed to having to read (okay, okay... so... I embellished a little and now my nose is growing), here are some pics of my fuel cap:
I reckon this will scrub up quite nicely

Hmm... S code... total junk... call it "the Beige Boat Anchor"...
AMK bolt kits are fantastic
If you pull old wiring and it is suspect go with Alloy Metal repros
Buy a cheap digital camera and as big a memory card as you can get and take 57 pictures of everything, then take 23 more... when you go to put it all back together they are gold. And document the process.
Bag and tag everything, in detail. Bags with no label, or even vague descriptions like "engine bolts" or (RH panel" with no label do little good if your memory is like mine!

Re: Glenn's '67 Project (without a clever name)
Dave read this thread and saw I was going to pull the engine out and he turned up on the doorstep this morning just as I was on the phone to Mert discussing "eye-candy and go-fast parts". So here are the pics:
This bloody thing fell out, anyone know where it goes??
...and this is the dirty great hole it left behind:
We had to perform an exotic mating ritual to try and get these two together, I found it extremely frustrating trying to find the right size bolts to bolt the block to the engine stand... and there are no damn stores open on a Saturday arvo which carry the 7/16UNC x 3-1/2" bolts I required:
After some lateral thinking we got it together but the engine stand certainly didn't look happy, anyone know what a 390 weights?? SERIOUSLY, do you??
I guess the engine stand will hold... but it's very disconcerting when the engine is bending down and the water pump is staring directly at your toes...
To be continued...

390 goes in right at 600 lbs (thems 272.7272727.... kgs, I like that number!) per Ford docs.

Nice work. So I assume your doing the 390 up to be all shiny with go fast parts? So what is the Mert plan - Boof likes engine porn.
I will someday think of something clever to say.
Re: Glenn's '67 Project (without a clever name)
No real plan from me, he was looking into the dual quad intake I have as a option over a tri-power... spendy bits, but look pretty schmick....

Re: Glenn's '67 Project (without a clever name)
If I were to build another FE, I think I'd just go with a complete engine off Barry Rabotnick or Keith Craft. It's been an expensive and frustrating at times, experience to build one from a bare block. And I'm not even bloody done yet.
It's pretty safe to say you need to budget 15-20k on the engine alone.

Re: Glenn's '67 Project (without a clever name)
Hmm... I did mine for about 12k, no issues. What was the drama?
I found:
block locally - $800 (+ misc extras)
rotating assembly (survival Motorsports) ~$2000
carb - $500 (OEM Holley)
428PI - $1000
Had a pair of heads, clean up, valves etc. in the 6k below.
Misc parts, machining, assembly, dyno - $6k
No real dramas other then the time it took to get parts shipped/selected.
As he has a lot of the parts some of the costs may be minimised.
So I was just under 12 for a stroker 445, which isn't bad IMHO. A crate is "easier", but I preferred to deal with a local builder for "what if" comfort... And I guess with the dollar dropping costs do go up... but if you stick to good parts and avoid the "race car" rabbit-hole stuff you can still keep it reasonable. And to me half the fun is in being involved in the build, and not just buying the engine, but to each their own.
As a comparison to rebuild the 289 with bog standard parts to C code specs I'm into it for 5k for pistons, rings, cam, lifters, intake valves, springs, misc, and machining. All other parts resued. Assembly by me..

Re: Glenn's '67 Project (without a clever name)
I did go with EFI and a custom set of headers, about $7k for those alone.
I'm still to buy a cam, hydraulic lifters, sump, water pump and other small bits and pieces.
I already had my 428 block, virgin bore, which needed $2k of machine work. Scat rotating assembly was $1k to balance.
The rotating assembly cost me more than what you did I think as again I brought locally and also upgraded the rods to H-beams.
I purchased new heads and intake. Everything is new except the block.
I did buy my parts locally but I did get them at mates rates.
I'll be somewhere around the 20k mark once done. I was a little surprised when I added up my invoices. I've spent 4 years gathering the parts when I had the cash to buy them. To be honest though I haven't cheaped out. Yes I could have spent more but I definitely didn't buy the cheapest parts.

Re: Glenn's '67 Project (without a clever name)
So really a build from scratch, all new but block.
A bit different to rebuilding what one has... if you budget and build a "basic" engine and don't get lost in the "more, bigger, faster" spiral many get caught up in... upgrade part A, need to change part B to match, then a better part C... which leads back to A which then gets upgraded again, as each individual step is "not a lot"... repeat...
yes, the final costs do add up fast...!

Re: Glenn's '67 Project (without a clever name)
The kicker for myself was that I had a complete engine. The car was a driver. But quickly turned into one fail after another. In the end, nothing but the block was used. I either changed direction or replaced due to faults.

Re: Glenn's '67 Project (without a clever name)
Thank you for the specs Mert. So... even with all the accessories (minus air-condition compressor and alternator) it should still come-in way under the limitation of the engine stand... but I still feel uneasy with the large "droop" that is happening...mert wrote:390 goes in right at 600 lbs (thems 272.7272727.... kgs, I like that number!) per Ford docs.
