Sparkplugs

Post by Ausjacko »

Hi Everyone
I am after a set of plugs for my 302 4V. The ones in it at present are from the US (Splitfires) and I want to replace them with known items.
the ones I am looking at are: Bosch DR7BC, NGK APR6FS or Champion RF9YC.
Couple of questions:
1. Any recos on brand and heat range (am thinking might go one jump hotter); and
2. Where can you buy them at a reasonable price. In Canberra no-one has them and with freight I am up for around $50AUD.
Cheers

If you are an NRMA member, try Repco, and see if they can order them in.
If the retail price is acceptable, then use your NRMA member card for a discount.

The auto parts shops I use can order bits and pieces in as required.

Also why would you want a hotter plug? Is it foulling the ones you have.?

Hi Shaun
Plugs are fine. Issue is that one is cracked and Spitfire do not have any docs (that I can find) that let you know what the number on the plug relates to (temp etc.) EG the plug is a Splitfire SF4E. SF is for Splitfire, the other two I am not sure. Hence the qeustion regarding plug temp range.

I went a slightly hotter plug, as I was fouling a few, but I'm doing over 50k runs to and from work up and down the freeway all year round

If the engine is pretty stock, standard heat range should be fine ie what ever the book says. If it's fouling plugs its either too fat on fuel, has a weak ignition, burning oil, or it has too much lead replacment added to the fuel. Lead replacement can soot plugs at idle when they are cold but it should clear. Running hot plugs can lead to pinging, or worst still engine damage, so be careful particulary with low octane ULP

NGK ShaunP and donoauto are right on the money. Best quality and performance on the market at present! Shaun is right on the money with heat range choice as well.

In case there is any confusion about what brand, like if it comes down to a split decision, I'd also say there is only 1 plug, for anything modified or early, and that is NGK.

I'd also use Bosch or Denso, in standard late model cars only. I wouldn't even plug vacuum hose with Delco or Champion plugs. Delco make good stuff, but their plugs are as bad as Champion.

NGK also have a help line, tell them what you have, what you do, and they will reccomend you a plug, based on experience, not a catalog.
