67 radiator options?

Post by gary70au »

Interested to hear what radiators people are running in their 67s.

Particularly interested in radiators from other years/makes/models.

3 Core out of a 390bb Stang 67/68 Engine is 306cubes, 10.4:1 Boss configuration big roller cam, also air con and power steer, 170 thermostat and runs 170 degrees night and day.

Sean @ Bosskraft got it for me, the alloy I had was just a ball breaker holding too much heat under the bonnet.

4 core out of a 454 powered jag. It's huge but should keep the 347 cool.

I had a 3 core '67 radiator, but had the bottom outlet moved to the other side as I had a later model 302.

My 66 came with a copper 4 core radiator, with a flex fan, and no shroud. Chromed waterpump. No overheating with the 351w.

When I fitted the 418 motor, I fitted a Derale plastic fan, still no shroud, and it still was good.
I came across a PWR 67 radiator cheap, so I fitted it, and still no shroud, and it still sits on 160 when driving.
I will say though, that the pulley sizes I run, are wrong. the waterpump should be 10% smaller, so it spins faster at idle. It will get hot at idle, 220 or so.

I think i may have an 86 mustang radiator in mine (assuming whoever put the 5.0 in used a donor car).

Trying to decide whether to get it reconditioned or to switch to something else. Just not sure what fits without major fabrication.

I thought maybe something from the eb to au falcons might work and allow me to use the nice twin fan sets. However i believe the inlet and outlet are wrong and some are the no cap type and need the correct overflow reservoir.

I have the EB one with EF twin thermos , however the radiator is way wide and sits on the edge of the rails each side on a bracket. I have the EB 5.0l motor complete so all the hoses etc a correct for it.

My 69 runs a stock standard rad,
engine is 351w stroked to 393, bored out 0.060" and gets driven reasonably hard quite often and as yet never had any signs of running hot, not even in traffic.

I have heard with aluminium rads you should run different coolant?

After some inspection and measurements i have no idea what my radiator is from now.

It has inlet on top passengers side outlet on bottom drivers side.

The core is approximately 20 inches wide by 16 inches high.

And if i understand radiator design correctly it is a 4 row one. (4 rows of tubes when i look through filler neck.

Surely this will keep the 347 happy if i get it checked and reconditioned.

Might switch up to a 16 inch thermo fan and make a shroud like Hybrid has.

Thanks Kerry,

It currently has a large trans cooler mounted to the front of it.

Could i run a smaller thermo fan as a pusher on the trans cooler or would i be better off moving the cooler elsewhere? I was planning of running a small fan on the trans cooler regardless.

Should i just space the cooler away from the front of the radiator maybe?

So the trans cooler is say 200mm square? If so then a good fan behind the rad (engine driven or electric) would still work better.

I have never been a fan (pun intended) of push fans as they never have the CFM of a pull fan.

The trans cooler is 250mm x 270mm, 20mm thick.

I currently have a 14 inch thermo fan pulling through the radiator
