Cowl Vent delete ????

Post by unilec5544 »

Since I will be putting an aftermarket Air con unit under my dash, I was contemplating deleting the cowl vents and if I need fresh air just open the window. Otherwise I will have to fabricate vents to attach to the original ones and have some way of closing them when I want full air conditioning.
Interested to know what opinions people have and if anyone has done this before?

First question,
where is the aircon going to get ITS air from?

Ive seen it done on several cars over here.

I would try and google an image if you can or cruise a few mustang sites and see what it looks like before you do it.

I know Ive seen it on a mustang site over here but I cant remember where sorry

When you are using the AC to it's full advantage, you recycle the air in the car anyway, closed circuit. It I need some fresh air to mix, just crack a window open.

After market A/C systems for Mustangs are recirc systems. They supply a block off plate for the heater.

I would leave the fresh air vent in the drivers side & install the block off plate on the heater side that comes with the kit.

Leave the outer vent alone, that way if you ever decide to go back, you can.

We did a vent delete on a 69. The owner likes it which is good, not a fan myself.

Me either, was consider what it would look like smoothed. Just too big an area for it to ever look natural. What would look ok i guess is an old fashioned pop up air scoop. You could falsify it if you wanted to, but at least you would have something that broke up the flatness of that area.

As for full recirc aircon...... :loopy: nothing beats aircon + fresh air, in heat mode to clear a foggy screen :)

I was looking at an aftermarket all in one heat/aircon for my XL a few months ago which was capable of Fresh/recirc. So they are available.

As for inside vent issue, go steal one out of an XR-XY falcoon. They fit on the opposite side with ease :)

My 2 'bobs' worth...

The plenum grill add's that 'original' character to these cars which you don't see in todays vehicles.

I'd purchase a plenum cowl cover for the times when you want your closed circuit with the air conditioning, however nothing beats the 'Fresh Air' circulation drawn in via the plenum, which is great to have during the Summer months.

Also, if you're going to 'plate' the grills up, it's just another area (if it's not done properly) that the likely hood of rust can start to emerge.

Cheers,

OK, so the general consensus is that its best if the vent stays, so I will go along with that. I may just use a manually operated cable to open &close the fresh air vent, as there is now, just transfer to the right side.

Thanks to all, Neil.
