I always thought it was the five points of the compass, north, south, east, west and lost.

The Commonwealth star has seven points to represent the states and territories but the 5 pointed star :shrug:

Other flags with the southern cross, I will say 3;
our sheepish friends New Zealand
then a guess that Fiji has it on their flag
and then just one extra for luck (maybe PNG)

Just a wild guess - as l really thought it had to do with the twot that originally draw it up, may not have had enough ink to draw a 6 pointed star.

heres another wild guess ---was it to represent a combination of British heritage and the 5 pointed star had something to do with maybe 5 other countries that the brit's occupied at the time??

If memory serves... a hint would be to take a look at the original flag as it may explain a bit more - it's all relative...

Yes Mike it is the only start that DID NOT change with a revamp of the original.
Documents state that the others were changed for
economic reasons during the manufacture of the flag. Weather that be true or it was just to make it easier I can not confirm nor deny.

HINT: the starts of the southern cross ranged from 5 points to 9 points on the original design so no Google !!!!!
