Re: power steering help
You really need to pull all the steering out to make it easier.
To get the control valve off, you need to remove that end cap that's held on with two screws. There is a nut there that you can undo to get the rest out.
But seriously mate.. spend the extra hour and get the whole lot out. It will be much easier to rebuild.

Re: power steering help
Do you have a couple of stands you can put under it?
If not, buy some.. well worth it in the long run. They are only something like $30 from supercheap and they will come in handy with a 40 year old car.
Did you end up finding a diagram for rebuilding the control valve?
I've got the one that I got with my rebuild kit that I can scan if need be.
Pretty sure someone here posted one for me, so maybe a search will bring something up for you.

Re: power steering help
I thought that too.. but they aren't cheap, so I ended up rebuilding mine.
I bought a new ram because that was only $120 or something.
But the control valve is more like $300.
