Driving lights for a 66

Hi, as I drive in kangaroo country I wish to fit some decent driving lights, possibly HID, but can't find a decent way of mounting them on my '66 daily driver.

Have looked at the normal fog/driving lights fitted to the grille on the 65/66 models but feel they won't give enough spread or penetration.

Has anyone any ideas as I don't want to spoil the look too much but also don't want to hit a large kangaroo in the 'stang (been there, done that with devastating results to two other cars)

Any advice appreciated.

I could build you a light bar that will fit to the upper bumper mount holes & not damage the chrome. You could then mount any light you wish.

Thanks Kerry, something like I had in mind but not as many lights.

Was looking at fitting 2x7" Hellas or similar but don't want to modify the bumper or bodywork if I can help it.

Do have an old grille that I could sacrifice but think it will only suit rectangular driving lights if I run HID's and mounting them may be a problem due to possible excessive vibration.

Current 90/100 H4's are ok for about 80k at night but prefer to travel at the speed limit if possible, hence the thought of HID's, already have then fitted to my other cars and extremely happy with them.

Will have a good look at what may be feasible.

Do not have to modify the bumper, just take out the two top bolts & the light frame will go in those holes. Do not have to modify anything else either, like grille etc. .... :like:

dont forget to buy the cheap as chips roo whistles from superdump.
Same principle as a dog whistle and they seem to work for me as i havent collected any skippy's since i started using them

Scedd, you've been lucky. Had them fitted to one of my damaged cars ($8,000 worth, it took out the front at 90kph) and two work cars that also hit roos and sustained damage. Made no difference but then maybe there were others that missed.

I'd rather see them than hit them.

I think my luck on the Hilux comes from 2 x 100w HID Headlights, 4 x 240mm 100W HID lightforce driving lights and a 1000mm 240w LED lightbar.
It melts any of the little fuckers that come near me.
I also have a Klaxon off a 37 Cadillac under the bonnet and i give it a blast whenever i see a roo and they always turn away.
It also scares the crap out of sheep and schoolkids.

I'm gonna put them on my challenger when I get it back. For $7, even if they only half work, it's not a lot of money to throw away.

Greg, it might be worth looking at some of the LED lights you can get these days. Some of them have a decent spread and punch out a lot of light for their size.

If I end up with a bullbar on the challenger, I'm going to put a couple of these on it.

The original lights would have been about 4" or so? Should be able to get something half decent in that size.

What is the diameter of the factory fog lights? If they are 5 3/4 inch you can get a halogen spot beam insert and use 100w bulbs. If they are 4 inch I'm pretty sure you can still get 100w sealed beam inserts.

I used these inserts on my AU XR8 and the lighting was a huge improvement on the factory set up. Don't use the xenon blue bulbs as the light output is a bluish colour and I found that colours are washed out. Grey roos seem to blend in to the background more with them. I've fitted halogen inserts to my 69 coupe, as I will be in the same boat as you- daily driving in kangaroo country.

EDIT- Found the factory fog lamps are 114mm. These inserts should be much better than the fog lamp insert that is 30w if you want to keep an original look.
