Crash at Monterey Historics, no one injured

Post by ozbilt »

This was so fortunate that the wheel missed everyone ......

Running old magnesium wheels is deadly (I assume it was a mag wheel). We used to (& I assume they still have) a life span of 5 years. Some of these wheels are over 40 years old. Ken Epsman is the driver & also organiser of the historics I believe.

Interesting that the hub broke up so badly that only the tire made it over the fence.
I will someday think of something clever to say.

Tyre & rim by the look of it. Took the center out of the wheel. Must have had hair line cracks from the years of racing.

I do not trust old mag wheels, reality I even closely inspect steel rims when rebuilding cars as some were prone to cracking as well.

That is how the jag xj 13 Lemans prototype crashed while filming some promotional footage for the V12 E type release. It had a wheel collapse at around 200Mph, Norm Dewis had time to curl up under the dash and survived multiple rolls. Car was rebuilt 20 years later when they found the original body forming bucks.
