PPG Aerospace metal primer

Post by shaun071 »

A question for the painters, I can get PPG Aerospace metal primer from work that is out of shelf life. If we have it on the shelf for 6 months it can't be used on aircraft so it gets "disposed" We might do a couple of touch ups from a 5kg can in the 6 months then the rest gets binned. Its a polyurethane paint and I can get the appropriate hardener and thinner to go with it. Is it OK to use on the car and what paint could be used over it?

Cheers Shaun

It's probably ok, but 2k epoxy etch is not expensive and you stick with the system you are painting the car with. I'd call PPG and ask if they are happy to warranty auto finish over it.

I'd also have a look at the TDS.

Being an aero product, you might find its adhesion to steel or other etch primers isn't so good.

I had a look at the TDS, thanks for the tip. It said the primer was only compatible with PPG aero 4040 system which gives me a lovely choice of matt green, black or tan as a top coat, all of which I can get for nix at work as well. I don't mind matt black.... But it only looks good for the first couple of days.

I haven't used that PPG primer in particular, but the statement of only compatible with xxx system, thats for aviation purposes where they have to cover their a*#$

I use a different PPG aviation primer (number escapes me at the moment) at work all the time and overcoat it with a wide range of top-coats and have never had any adhesion issues..
