What to use in a Parts Cleaner?
Hi Guys,
what solvent/degreaser should i use in a parts cleaner?
picked one up the other day, smells like they used fuel. just wondering what will do the best job.
do you drain it at the end of every use? i never had one back on the farm. everything was done with fuel by hand. i think i need some help getting through all these parts.
It was on the farm where i learnt polystyrene + fuel =

I have used Kerosene in mine. But you can also buy 20L drums of the proper stuff which is meant to be safer than kerosene (more resistant to ignition) which is what I use now. Something like this:

I wouldn't use fuel (gasoline) in one because of the electric motor in it. Unless you like setting yourself on fire.
There is no need to drain it each time if it has a lid on it. Just close it.

I started looking into this a couple of years ago but never ended up making a decision as I didn't end up buying a parts cleaner. FWIW I do remember reading online that some of the new environmentally friendly cleaners where crap especially if you don't have the ability to heat them up.

I use kero for everything except auto transmissions for which I use ULP. And I threw the pump away years ago as it was useless!

well they take about 40-60l litres from memory. I used about 30-40L kero to 10 L degreaser this allows enough degreaser to wash of with water after. I have used a few green degreasers they are all shit for a parts washer.

If its a late model parts washer be careful, they have plastic inside the pumps and cannot use hydrocarbons like petrol etc.
I have new one that only uses water based cleaners. I use a mix of simple green and water and it works fine, even for old grease and much. Filter it out, drain off the oil and reuse.
