Tony's '70 Fastback

This old girl has sat in the shed partly dismantled and gathering dust while I have sourced parts, installed equipment for the build, worked on other more pressing projects and generally procrastinated. So the time has now arrived to finally get serious about this project.
After being a member of this group for a few years I have gained some great info and enjoyed following other peoples builds and so I felt it's only fair that I try and contribute something in return.

She's a bog standard 1970 Sportsroof, white with red interior and a fair bit of rust. San Jose built Californian car with no real surprises. I brought this car knowing full well what I was getting into.



Actually there was one nice surprise. Considering she has had a few owners in her 46 year life it seems that all were non smokers. The ashtray looks nearly untouched as evident by the lack of rusty burn marks and the lighter looked almost brand new with not a trace of burn residue on the element.



I have almost completed the full strip down and will put some more photo's up as I continue on with this project.

Current state.


Rust in a few areas.







Replacing or re-skinning doors, replacing tail light panel, trunk lid, both rear lower quarter panels, outer wheel wells, drivers side floor pan, lower panel under rear window, trunk drop off panels and rear bumper supports just to name a few of the tasks ahead.

Thanks Nassi, I'm up to about plan F after debating with myself on different ideas of the final look.
At this stage looking at Boss 302 style livery in either Red or Calypso Coral.
Planning on using original 302 after rebuild with a 5 speed manual. Sticking with original style suspension.

That will be a very nice driver imo. Calypso Coral has always been a favourite of mine, as I have had a few XY's and generally chose Vermillion Fire as the colour. I am sure they are the same colour, if not they are very very close.

Ahhhh. Takes me back to when I started mine.
I love the calypso coral colour and made up my mind to paint mine that colour after seeing it in person.

Seeing you are going with the "Boss" look, it would be nice for the car to put some wraps on the towers.

Agree with Kerry, currently you can get any two wraps for $10 at subway. It might be worth the trailer hire if they fit them...

Excellent another build. +1 with Boofhead. I really like the 70, it has grown on me over the last few years.

Yeah the later ones have grown on me too. Still not a big fan of the rear lights though.

Here was one hidden gem, a perfect Mexican repair to the front of the left hand quarter panel. Drill a shit load of holes in the damaged area to give the "bondo" something to grip on to and file/sand to shape. This way you don't have to remove any interior panels to repair the damage and the panelbeater probably charged the owner for hours not actually worked.
Not a problem now as that part of the quarter panel will be binned anyway and no other damaged panels are evident.
