No they're still in the database, but there is yet another bug that is stopping the Private Messages module updating.
Once I'm able to update it, the messages will be there.

Pete, that's one of the developers of the website code - probably not who you think it is.
Interestingly, his post count is showing zero after posting once.
I think I reported that bug too.
