Magnaflow exhaust systems...

Post by mungus »

Wondering if anyone has experience with the US made Magna-flow exhaust systems?

Thinking of adding their 2.5" Mustang FE system to my next Summit order. They look to be of good quality / nicely made on the relevant YouTube videos, and seem to be quite well liked stateside, etc.

Install wise, aside from fabricating the header joint I only have to change the tips to get the Bullitt look I want, which is nothing.

Presumably as a 68' car the later ADR noise specs won't apply for her initial VIC roadworthy, just that it's not obnoxiously loud and of good engineering standard? Any comments in that regard? I guess each state differs somewhat. Otherwise I'd have to pay for a strangled system then junk it after rego. Seems a bit of a waste if so, and the federal govt dox I've read on standards for imports all seem to say cars that old don't have to have this or that...

Can't answer the regulatory question but Magnaflow is a very strong respected brand. Heavily used on both classic cars and modern cars.

Think most states say 90 db or so, Qld police measure its a 2/3 max torque RPM as advertised by the manufacture of the that particular engine I think

In NSW it's 96db max at 3000rpm I think.
No matter what year, there is a still a max.

But for initial rego, if it's over the limit there's some simple things you can do to get it passed.

Very good system as stated.
Others have told you the db limits and there are tricks to get it down if need be.
I will someday think of something clever to say.

When your being tested, very gently work the engine to the 3000rpm. I know mine is too loud but the rego guys were happy to help get it registered as is. They were the ones to tell me to be very gentle ;)

The Magnaflow systems are very well engineered. Lifetime warranty (as long as you are the original purchaser). They do tend to 'boom' a bit.

My exhaust specialist prefers Super Cats over Magnaflow, he says they're essentially the same system and Super Cats have a much nicer finish without the ugly welds at each end.

I had Flowmaster 40's previously, here's what they sound like:

Thanks guys, all good info.

I've probably used a similar "trick" with a bike exhaust overseas in the past. I'll do some research as to what Db Vic roads require and post it back here for the benefit of future readers.

Fitted one to my 69 c/jet. Nice system, I had to mod mine a bit due to the staggered shock setup. I would buy again if I had to. I fitted it at home with the car on jack stands!!. Yes I had to make the joins at the front as well.
On a side NOTE, Welsh plugs of the required size, and tuned with a 8mm drill bit can make an exhaust sound really quite, and easily removed when not required!!

Supercat are the Magnaflow suppliers in Aus !!! Supercat is owned by the Melbourne Steel Co. If he is referring to their 'Motor Sport' series of mufflers they are basic Chinese made stainless steel.

OK I did some research, googled and spoke to both a reputedly good custom exhaust builder and a VIC roadworthy inspector who has done a few classic Mustangs, and so as far as I can fathom, this is the apparent state of play in VIC.
VIC Roads itself just stipulates the car must meet "the standards". These standards are not VIC specific but are contained in the EPA regulations. I've attached the relevant page here. For our cars (pre 1983) the limit is 96 dB. For post 83 its 90 dB.
The method of measurement varies according to the car but for V8's the accepted RPM is 3,000. So there ya go!

As for tricks, with bikes so called "db killers" are a convenient way of meeting inspections for race or road standards, and are then easily removed for closed circuit work etc. They are similar to the welsh plug suggestion. At least with the Magnaflow the mufflers are only clamped in, so thats not hard to do. Basically they are a restrictor plate with a hole of whatever size is needed. One chap I spoke to even recommended shoving a loose knit type stainless poly pad (pot scrubber) deep into the muffler outlet pipe, then retrieving it with a spring puller afterwards! No disassembly required and made the difference! Ha!

Yeah I have used steel wool in the front of a baffled muffler in the past with good results.
You can also buy flanges that bolt between your exhaust flanges - summit might even have them.

So are you concerned about getting pulled over while driving or just getting it on the road? Getting it on the road should be no issue.

Just getting it on the road. I doubt many PO-leese would hassle anyone driving anything less than a ridiculously loud classic Mustang. A bit like HD's. They are nearly all loud but few I know get grief, unless they have the whole "outlaw gang" look going on.

I just didn't want to spend the $$ on the system only to find it was disallowed by the engineer or roadworthy tester etc.
Hence asking for the experiences of others.
