My work did a similar thing recently, not on the same scale of course but it was amazing how quickly the dynamics changed.
We were three weeks ahead in production so it seemed like a good time to allow a little leave.
Everyone was allowed 2 days but only 1 person off at a time, within two weeks were are back in the sh1t, today just completing trailers for tomorrow pickup.

"Lean thinking", production "just in time" that way they are carrying little inventory. I did the same thing with the factory in Dongguan, basically we just carried sheet stock & rectangular tubing. We just reacted to orders coming in.

Yes very lean, sometimes a little too lean. "just in time" production works very well in an ideal world but the world we all live in makes it a bit more challenging. Necessary though in today's world.
I would rather have the odd complaint about my job than not have a job to complain about.

Don't they have a backlog of Aus. orders to fill?

Probably not scheduled at that time. RHD production would only be a couple of weeks per year at most.
