4R70W to replace AOD

Hi,

So the downshift on my AOD is annoying me to no end. It hangs on 3-2 and 2-1 longer when the car warms up. A couple of 4R70W transmissions have shown up in Brisbane and I was thinking of upgrading.

Apparently I can use my current flexplate and that is about it. From what I've been reading I need a new slip yoke, crossmember, driveshaft, etc as the 4R70W is 1" longer.

Can anyone confirm?

That's surprising considering most of the 4R70W parts transfer into the AOD.

By the way, GidyUp on the forum is potentially looking for an AOD.
I'm sure yours would be fine with a valve body change.

yep. Seems a little steep but has a converter and confirmed speedo gear.

My AOD is a tricked up B&M one. It will upshift at over 5K @ WOT and spin the wheels but puttering around town is a bit painful now with the bigger cam in the 347

Yeah, I looked at that one also. Did you read the advert? You have the choice of 2 but he is only selling the one. He is also not confirming that the insides are refurbished which I would guess they are not. Feels a bit steep with the price but they are few and far between on sale over here. Like the idea of the 4R70W or the AODE. I have also heard via my research that you need to shorten your tailshaft with them as opposed to the AOD.

do it. Use a microsquirt to program and control it.

Also the slip yoke and crossmember are no good from what I can see. If that is the case it is another $2K ish to fit before even rebuilding (Which you would anyway). It's all a bit steep.

I was hoping I could use my AOD install bits but doesn't look like it :-(

Apparently the 4r70w is one inch longer than the AOD.

I believe the 4R70W is 1" longer due to the larger converter. So the bell housing goes 1" further into the tunnel. might be an issue for some headers/exhausts.

Also read somewhere but can't locate it... The rear extension bush and seal are larger on the 4R70W.

Yep that's why the AOD yoke is no good.

4R70W measures 1.6" while the AOD measures 1.5". I believe you can use the tailhousing of your AOD and put it on the 4R70W them you can use the 1.5" yoke. Problem solved.
