rhd steering conversion
Hi, advice would be appreciated.
Whats the best setup to use to convert my sons 65 coupe to RHD.
Preferably rack and pinion if cost effective, but not critical.
I also want to put a collapsible column in it.
I looked at retro rack and think that $3500 is BS for what you get,its not even 1500 value in parts.
Any ideas or what way did you do it??
Thanks,
john

Re: rhd steering conversion
I run an RRS rack in the convertible and have used TCP racks in a couple of conversions but still think the XF power steering box and modified XY drag link is about the nicest to drive.
As for collapsable steering column, I am using a 69 Mustang in the F100 as parts are easy to come buy. I can't see why one would not work in 66. Looking at your past projects, any modifications would be a cinch.

Other than the RRS, I totally agree & was what I was going to say on Sundaynassi wrote:I run an RRS rack in the convertible and have used TCP racks in a couple of conversions but still think the XF power steering box and modified XY drag link is about the nicest to drive.

Re: rhd steering conversion
John Greene has retired but I reckon if you sent him the 65 drag link and a falcon one he would make you a link and give the drilling templates if you ask nicely, for cash money, He is still in his Shed building a 32 roadster for his son. If he dosen't feel like it maybe he'd let me do it on his jigs, Ive done that before for Ralph's 67 FB GTA its about a days job + xray.

Re: rhd steering conversion
The 65 drag link is two welds. So more expensive to do right.
Use a TCP rack - costs yes but easy to do.

I will someday think of something clever to say.
Re: rhd steering conversion
I've never heard anyone accuse the rrs stuff of being cost effective. I got the receipts from the PO of my car and it came to nearly $14K!!! It was the first one done on QLD though so maybe it is cheaper now.

Re: rhd steering conversion
Also keep in mind if your 65 is a 6cyl all the draglinks, tierods, stub axles, pitman and idler arms are all different to the V8 models and thinner than an equivelant XM-XP 6cyl falcon , so are basically junk on a RH conversion. And the XY-XF Falcon stub axles you can use on the 67 onwards models are not the right geometry for pre 66 models either.

They are not the right geometry for the 67 - 70 either.scott66stang wrote:And the XY-XF Falcon stub axles you can use on the 67 onwards models are not the right geometry for pre 66 models either.

Re: rhd steering conversion
XB are actually basically identical to 67 mustang stubs as for geometry they are not 3/8 taller like other falcons not sure why, but only XB . Steering arms are the same as well. On the QLD Trans-am cars they run XF stubs, for the early cars Woody gets John to alter the steering arms to correct bumpsteer then they make a custom hub to hold a set of willwood 6 spot calipers and rotors which are actually for a Vette, these fit in a 15" wheel as required by the rules.
For 65 RHD drag link John uses the mustang center piece of the LHD link and then uses falcon ends to suit XF pitman and Idler. I've help him do a couple after he had some cataract eye surgery when he couldn't weld for a while. There is a far bit of welding, its a gradual process to ensure the weld is sound and will pass X-ray.

My apologies for forgetting,
but thanks for all the advice.
Im leaning towards a rack setup for ease.

Im sure Kerry will chime in but as far as firewall goes you can use all your existing original mustang bits to swap over..no need to cut and shut or over complicate anything. K-man can explain it better than my limited knowledge. .. look to the cookie! !jbb wrote:My apologies for forgetting,

Re: rhd steering conversion
Hi JBB petes classics is a TCP dealer here in Oz and he was advertising a couple of manual racks on eBay recently one was rhd for around the $1500 mark if you decide that route. Not sure if it sold or not.
I was also looking at getting some billet mirror rhd dash and glove box lids done to make the conversion easier and look better. I have the CNC models done and have someone lined up to do the cnc work though stalled due to set up costs. Let me know if you are interested in a set and I may be able to progress.
Also Kerry's your man re advice for rhd. I'd say check out my thread for info re the rhd but Photobucket had screwed that up
Cheers John
