Finally getting to Mrsozbilt's Mach 1

Post by ozbilt »

Will be starting to freshen up the Mach soon. Mechanically, new rear axles, service the FMX as it will need seals at least, go over the suspension and brakes, then have a good look at the engine.

If the bottom end of the engine is fine, I will be using the original heads. It is a 2bbl car but was wondering if it is worth changing the intake to an aluminium 4 bbl and fitting an EFI throttle body ? All this talk here is on that subject so I may as well seek info .......

Remember I want the rest basically stock and would like the ability better managed fuel feeding it.

Once mechanically finished, the outside will get a lick of paint and the seats will be recovered. Tyres and a new front windshield and it will be back on the raid.

We then unload one of our road cars as we no longer need 2 full time cars.

Ok, now back to thoughts on the EFI for what will be a standard engine ..........

We'll I don't know really Kerry. Personally I'd just put a new intake and a fresh 4 barrel Holley on it. It's managed this long with a carb. I'm not sold on these electric carby's it's not proper injection really. Though they seem to work ok. I'd have a go at a Fittec I think if I was going down that path. But do the fuel tank correctly and not use that control centre thing

Do you think you are a microsquirter? If not, go one of the throttle body jobbies from edelbrock, holley or fitech. They look stockish and require minimal alterations. What am I saying, you can make anything metal work so go the whole individual throttle body set-up!

Run a return line to your tank now as whatever unit you ultimately select will use it.

I can't speak for the EFI but I certainly agree with the 4 bbl manifold and a nice little Holley, perhaps a bit of a choke for those wintery mornings. Once tuned and jetted it will probably see you out I reckon......

Page 1 ... thinking about fitting a new manifold & carb;
Page 10 ... the Novi is all fitted, just need to tune the megasquirt.

There's pros and cons to both really. I will try to remain neutral

Reality is, the fueling is not where you'd get any extra power - it's probably going to be in ignition timing. Definitely should get better mileage with injection, but a well set up carb will perform just as well up top really.

You'll get better cold starting on EFI generally. But it's a lot more expensive than sticking with carby.

I fitted a Fitech System to Blue and can't be happier. I turn the key. it starts immediately and idles perfectly. As Shaunp says above, stay away from the FCC it's Fugly.

The car was a concourse winner both here and the USA, but those days are behind it and it was built as a driver .........

I was not talking concourse so much as what could you do to the car in the day. I.e. 4bbl with a bigger carb, headers and exhaust, wider period mag wheels. More in keeping with what the car was back then.

Mind you, I stuck a 4age (twin cam) efi motor and jap 5 speed box in a Toyota Sprinter back when it was only 12 months old. Original motor was a single cam with a 5 speed manual hanging off the back. What I would not give to still have it since they are getting $30k for a good one.

Sometimes simplicity is nice for a driver. If you have a reliable carb and it runs good, why fix it if it isn't broken?

I have no idea how much modification and adjustment it takes to fit the new EFI units - they look a lot more simple than the old days of taking one off a new car and retrofitting onto a vintage mustang.

Drivability and reliability would be my main themes with a driver.

I am sure Kerry can make either work, just how much work does he want to do?
