That old chestnut - steering conversion for RHD

Post by Ashley47 »

Yep, it's been asked a million times.

I've seen much talked about using XF steering boxes etc for RHD conversions but I wanted to ask about manual steering conversions.

I have a 1966 6cyl, converted to RHD probably 30 years ago. Steering is from a Falcon XP box with the rest being 6 cylinder Mustang components. With parts getting harder to find I wanted to explore the options of using other falcon parts. I am not interested in going down the path of using XF parts or power-steering. I just wanted to see what type of drag link, pitman arm I could use to swap out my worn XP steering box. Thanks in advance.

You crack me up. I think he meant newer than the next model Falcon from the 60's ;-)

Sorry, he said he did not want XF and anything later is rack and pinion.

Was the conversion done well (ie no bump steer etc).

Getting 6cyl mustang parts won't be an issue as they're all still reproduced.

What about sending the current steering box to a reputable recondioner? If the box is worn they can hard chrome it. If done properly it will probably never need doing again. Most other steering and suspension parts I would think would be readily accessible.

I would say the drag link is also XP Falcon as the Mustang one cannot be reversed.

I would suggest a box rebuild and I have a contact up my way if you cannot find anyone down your way.

XF boxes are hard to find so even if you decided on that direction (no pun intended) it would mean locating one and then a rebuild.

Reality, if it has gone 30 years with that box, then rebuild it. One thing I would do is cut the column off it and put a uni joint in there. That gives you the opportunity to install a collapsible column in the car

A lot of early conversions were done with Compact Fairlane drag links. The XF power box is really used on any Falcon with power steer from XA

My old mans XD has an integrated power steer box too. Is that different to the XF one?

I believe late XE to XF used a variable ratio steering box.

I believe you are correct Nuts, Xe's onward also ran a Saginaw pump.

If its a 6 cylinder car and you have the 6 cylinder drag link etc. You can use a Suzuki Sierra box, need to recces it a bit. Never done it myself but seen it done, looks pretty good.

Rebuilding your old box saves the cost of engineering if you modify it with something else.

As I have said, it drove converted for 30 years, so a freshen up will see it good for another 30 years

While still on topic, can anyone suggest a standard height spring for small block, rang the local pedders bloke and he was talking king springs but hasn't got back to me yet,so ideas would be appreciated.

KFFL-0 are the lowered ones.
So I believe KFFS-0 should be standard height.
