C6 Auto, gear selection problem.

Ive got a 67 C6 Auto trans that used to shift manualy from 1st to 2nd to 3rd ok. Then the cable came apart. (Hurst Shifter) I replaced the cable and have not been able to get the adjustment right. To complicate matters the valve body has been replaced at some time with one from a latter model. 67 models had the detent to position the gear select rod/valve built into the valve body were the later models have the detent fitted to the input shaft on the trans case.The result is that theres nothing to positivly locate the gear slector shaft in any given postion. Ive made a detent mechanism up but I need to know how to identify were the gear select rod in the valve body should be for a particular gear. eg 2nd gear.
